Submitting Scholarly Content To THL
Scholarly participation in THL can take many forms, but in the broadest sense there are individual submissions, projects, and administration/review. Individual submissions represent single, discrete items that can stand on their own, or subsequently be incorporated into projects by the same person or different people. Such individual submissions range from a major essay to a single paragraph or image. Projects represent a coordinated initiative to tackle a given scholarly task by creating and integrating multiple instances of data and interpretive scholarship. The best way to get a sense of the possibilities for projects is to explore THL's present projects, and then contact us at to discuss a potential project. For THL to thrive, we need scholars to be willing to take on administrative roles in overseeing different nodes of THL, and offering to provide peer review of THL submissions.

Essays:
- Contribute an essay on any topic
- Submit an essay to JIATS (Journal of the International Association of Tibetan Studies)
- Submit nodes, paragraph summaries of nodes, or entire essays to one or more of the following Encyclopedias of Tibet and the Himalayas:
- Art
- Cultures and Ethnicities
- Events & Timelines
- Historical Periods
- Languages & Dialects
- Literary Genres
- Medicine
- Methodologies
- People
- Places (including monasteries)
- Political Schemes
- Religious Doxographies
- Religions & Sects
- Tantra
- Tibetan Practice Lineages
- Tibetan Religious Practices
- Offer e-reprints classified in terms of subjects
- articles for which you have copyright
- out of print book publications
- single chapters of print books (get permission from publisher as form of advertisement)
Cultural geography resources:
- Contribute Place Dictionary entries for places (place names, descriptions, locations, relationships)
- Contribute hand-drawn maps of locales
- Help expand, revise, and describe the THL Feature Thesaurus
Multimedia resources:
- Contribute cataloged images
- Contribute slide shows of images
- Contribute audio or video recordings
- Organize and describe THL holdings of images, audio, or video
Reference resources:
- Contribute bibliographies
- Contribute a timeline
- Contribute to filling out our "finding aids" for easy-to-reference guides to finding dates, people, texts, places, and events
- Contribute to our documentation
Literature resources:
- Provide summaries of Tibetan texts, or even individual chapters
- Help markup a Tibetan e-text by identifying its structural and thematic components
- Describe a type of structural division in Tibetan texts and analyze its function over time
Language resources:
- Submit grammar discussions for Tibetan
- Contribute studies of words or individual glossaries to the Tibetan, Nepali, or Thangmi dictionaries
- Make an instructional unit for studying Tibetan out of Tibetan Learning Language Resources (TLLR) raw materials and models
Toolbox: How to Participate
The biggest block to realizing the vast promise of digital technology for transforming scholarship is the nascent and unsettled state of the art. There is a massive body of scholarship languishing on the hard drives and paper archives of individual scholars on the one hand, and exciting new digital library archives on the other hand. What is missing is a series of template-driven digital pipelines that enable scholars to easily transport their scholarship in the right technical form with the requisite metadata without requiring massive amounts of manual processing by either the scholar or library staff. THL is contributing to the building of such digital pipelines with its "Scholar's Toolbox" initiative. The Scholar's Toolbox is dedicated to providing scholars with a wide variety of user-friendly tools and systems for facilitating the preparation of their data and scholarly interpretations in ways that minimize the need for extensive post-submission processing with the consequent delays in publication and possibilities of error introduction.
