Epa (e pa) is one of the original subsidiary houses (mi tshan) of Bati Regional House (sba ti khang tshan), and this is its main compound. The Epa Regional House complex was renovated in 1998. Even before this time it served as a home for elderly monks. In 2002 it housed about fifty such monks from different regional houses. Since all of the rooms are filled, a new monk may not enter this nursing home until a previous one has died. Monks must be sixty-five years of age or older to qualify for admission.
The complex is three stories tall with monks’ quarters on three sides (S, E, W) and a temple on the remaining (N) side. The temple is located on the second story. Originally, the kitchen was located beneath the temple on the first story, but this is now storage.
As of 2002 there was only one monk from this regional house left at Sera (se ra).
