One of several apartment houses (spyi khang) that belong to the Hamdong Regional House (har gdong khang tshan) – the largest regional house of Sera (se ra) – this particular compound is the largest surviving apartment house of this regional house, and one of the largest in the entire monastery. It has two distinct sections that are adjacent to one another. Each consists of three or four stories of monastic living quarters built around a large central courtyard, and each has its own entrance. The western portion is older, and there were about fourteen monks living there in 2002. The eastern portion is newer and had about forty monks in residence at that time.
