Description: While Tibetan sources on the subject are rare, this article looks at two short Tibetan pieces which give accounts of the origin and use of the prayer wheel. The first work, which was written by Gungtangpa (gung thang pa) (1762-1823), is translated in the article while only the pertinent sections of the second work, by Sengchen Lama (seng chen bla ma) (b. 1784), are discussed. Though having several names, prayer wheels are often called "maṇi khor" (ma Ni 'khor) in Tibetan because of the mantra commonly found on them: "Oṁ Maṇipadme Hūṁ."
