Description: Ruegg here translates the sixth chapter of the History of Philosophical Doctrines (Grub mtha' shel gyi me long) written by Thu'u bkwan Blo bzang chos kyi nyi ma (1737-1802) and completed in 1801. This chapter concerns the history and doctrine of the Jonang (jo nang) sect of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as refutations of their positions. As an introduction to the text, Ruegg discusses some of the key features of the Jonang sect and the atmosphere of 14th-17th century Tibet, particularly in Tsang (gtsang), in which Jonangpa thinkers such as Dölpopa (dol po pa shes rab rgyal mtshan) synthesized a unique Buddhist doctrine.
