Description:
This unique transnational program, based in India, Nepal and (conditions permitting) the Autonomous Region of Tibet, offers an ideal setting in which to study traditional Tibetan culture and religion. Using the resources of the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, government agencies and monastic colleges, students examine perspectives on Tibet’s past, its cultural values and the lives of historical and contemporary Tibetans.
The program originates in Dharamsala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile in the mountains of northwest India, where students engage in intensive Tibetan language study, live with Tibetan families, and begin the interdisciplinary seminar. The group then travels to Kathmandu, where the program curriculum focuses on the status of Nepal’s sizable Tibetan community. Conditions permitting, an excursion to the Autonomous Region of Tibet provides opportunities for students to explore monasteries and other cultural sites.
