Title: Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies

Description: The CIHTS was envisioned by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in consultation with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and established in 1967. Its twofold mission is to educate Tibetan young adults and those from the Himalyan border regions of India, and to restore ancient Indian sciences and literature preserved in the Tibetan language, but lost in the original Sanskrit.
The institute receives foreign students as non-degree casual researchers provided their research projects is approved by the Government of India and is duely recommended by their parent Universities. The Institute also receives foreign scholars under various Cultural Exchange Programmes through Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and University Grants Commission (UGC) of Government of India. The affiliated scholars are provided Library facilities and expert guidance in the field of Tibetology and Buddhology.
The Institute also imparts a Diploma course in Tibetan Buddhism for the interested foreign students. At present, the Institute does not conduct any course in Tibetan language nor any correspondance course.
