Description: The article aims, through documents of the previous century, to get a glimpse of the sometimes conflicting relationships between royal powers and monasteries and to show the permanency of this mode of relationship despite changing political conditions. The article focuses on the former Kingdoms of the Dang valley, which is situated in the southwest of Nepal in the Inner Terai, bordered by the Mahabharat Lekh on the northern side and Siwalik on the southern. This area was covered with forest until the nineteenth century and infested by malaria up to the mid-twentieth. The article includes 1 map of the location and discusses the documents published by Narharinath of the relationship between the monastery of Chaughera, its guthi endowments, and the state.
