Description:
The article presents the major shifts in formal and contextual elements in relation to the historical model of Kalidasa's Abhiyana sakuntala natak. The Sakuntala topic has long been popular among prominent literary figures in Nepal. It has drawn attention of the writers like Motiram Bhatta, Sambhuprasad Dhungel, Lekhnath Paudel, Laxmiprasad Devkota, Khadgaman Malla and others. Madhavprasad Ghimire's Sakuntala is the latest in the list of modelling or reshaping the traditional theme which is based on Kalidasa's Abhiyana sakuntala. The modernized portrayal and upliftment of Dusyanta's character along with the new shape of the happy ending set up pillars of an ideologically new story in Ghimire's work. The article discusses the elimination of the supernatural and reintroduction of the element of truth as a means for acheiving realism and the proximity of the present.
