Description:
The article gives an account of tattooing practices among the Tharus of Dang Deokhuri, in far western Nepal. The tattooing is done by making drawings on the human skin and then inserting these inside the skin by punching it with a small bunch of needles and thereby making them permanent. This art is called Tika Chhedaune or Godna Garaune in some parts of Nepal. Tattoo was derived from the Tahitian word 'ta' which means to strike, and Captain Cook was the first person to introduce this word and art into Europe after his first voyage in 1768-71. Tattooing among the Tharus can be classified as two kinds: 1) main or compulsory tattooing and 2) ordinary or optional tattooing. The article explains the name, time, and occasion when the tattooing is done. It also discusses the aim and objective of making tattoos among the Tharus. Included are 2 pages of sketches illustrating the tattoos made on legs. The article also includes different forms of tattoos in sketch. It includes 4 leaves of plates.
