Title: Of People and Naks: The Management and Meaning of High Altitude Herding among Contemporary Solu Sherpas
Language of title: English
Author/Creator: Kathryn S. March
One Sentence Summary: The article studies economic and management aspects of high altitude herding in Solu in northern Nepal.

Description: The article studies economic and management aspects of high altitude herding in Solu in northern Nepal. High altitude herding remains an integral part of contemporary Solu Sherpa life. Solu Sherpas recognize two distinct types of high altitude pastoralism - dzum gothe and nak gothe. Dzum gothes are more numerous in Solu than nak gothes. Dzum produce the most diary products, which are in high demand and easily marketed in Solu. The primary difference between the dzum and nak gothes is that while the dzum produce only dairy products for sale, the nak gothe also sells calves and blankets. Included are sketches of thirteen separately named tormas. (Rajeev Ranjan Singh 2007-01-11)
