Description:
The article gives an account on the Nepalese Satar festivals of Sohari and Patamela. The Satars live in Morang and Jhapa districts in the eastern most part of Nepal. Two festivals, Sohari and Patamela, are highlights of Satar traditions. The explicit reasons for celebrating these festivals are different but there are some striking similarities underlying the rituals. During both of these festivals, men are sent on hazardous assignments (hunting in one case and being swung in the air while tied to a bamboo pole in the other) and in each case, after these tasks are accomplished the men are then worshipped by the women of the household. The article includes 3 leaves of plates. (Rajeev Ranjan Singh 2007-01-18)
