The article discusses Newari language. Newari is one of four Tibeto-Burman languages. The most common name for the language in linguistic literature is Newari but in colloquial terms the language is simply known as Newa Bhae by the majority of native speakers, and indigenous publications by Newari writers consistently refer to it as Nepal bhasa. The article discusses the distribution of Newari speakers. Newari speakers are concentrated in the Kathmandu valley with a few settlements in trading centers outside the valley. The article discusses 'classical Newari' as well as 'contemporary Newari'. It reviews earlier works on Newari. It discusses on the genetic classification and the controversy present in the classification of Newari language. It represents the different classification systems of Newari in a diagram.
