Description:
The article discusses approaches of integrated rural development programmes (IRDP) in Nepal. The author argues that integrated rural development programmes with multi-sector approaches appeared very sound, and a series of such IRDPs have been designed and are being implemented in Nepal. The IRDPs in Nepal are generally designed with a long-term perspective ranging from 15 to 20 years and are conceived of in three phases. First, infrastructure building and program initiation. Second, intensive implementation of the projects and strengthening of local institutions. Third, handing over the responsibility to the concerned district agencies and completion of the major construction scheme. IRDPs are implementing projects in 32 districts. The article discusses different approaches followed in implementing programmes and it also discusses the problems of implementation in Nepal. (Rajeev Ranjan Singh 2007-02-12)
