Introduction
The term "pharmacy" refers to the development of medicinal materials; "pharmacology," sometimes also called "pharmaco-therapeutics," refers to the clinical application of medicinal substances. These pages may eventually discuss both of these topics but for now focuses primarily on pharmacy. These pages will introduce viewers to aspects of Tibetan pharmacy as practiced and studied today in Lhasa, Tibet. Most of our videos were filmed at the Factory of Tibetan Medicine, a branch of the Lhasa Mentsikhang.
The following basic texts are recommended for the introductory study of this topic:
Dorje and Meyer, eds., Tibetan Medical Paintings (New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1992), Volume 1.
Christa Kletter and Monika Kriechbaum, eds., Tibetan Medicinal Plants (Stuttgart: medpharm Scientific Publishers, 2001).
Pasang Yonten Arya, Dictionary of Tibetan Materia Medica (Delhi: Motilal Banarsidass, 1998).
Tsewang J. Tsarong, Tibetan Medicinal Plants (Kalimpong: Tibetan Medical Publications, 1994).
