Leigh Miller Sangster is a Ph.D. candidate at Emory University in the Institute for the Liberal Arts' program in Culture, History and Theory. She conducted Fulbright funded ethnographic fieldwork in Lhasa and TAR (2006-07) for her dissertation, entitled "Painting Memory and Modernity in Lhasa, Tibet". Leigh Sangster co-curated, with Tony Scott, the first exhibition of contemporary Tibetan art in Beijing at the prestigous Red Gate Gallery (June 2007); a second group show is scheduled for spring 2008. She has presented original research in Tibetan studies at IATS (Bonn, 2006), AAA (DC, 2007), Princeton Tibet Site Seminar confernece (March 2008) and IABS (Atlanta, 2008), in addition to numerous guest lectures for university courses, study abroad programs, museums and development/ NGO organizations. Her research interests include modern Tibetan history and culture, the anthropological subfields of art, life history narrative, indigenous/minority representation and alternative modernities, and interdicsiplinary cultural theory particularly in the areas of memory studies, visual culture, and trauma studies. She currently resides in Portland, OR.
