About Us: Participants in the Tibetan Medicine Encyclopedia
This project was begun by Frances Garrett in Lhasa during the summer of 2001 with the collection of over 25 hours of video and several hundred photographs and other forms of documentation, including audio and text focusing on Tibetan medicine.
The Collections are directed by Frances Garrett, who is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. Contributors include Kurtis Schaeffer (University of Alabama), Leslie Blackhall (University of Virginia), and many scholars and physicians at the Hospital and Factory of Tibetan Medicine in Lhasa, Tibet (please see the Video List for a record of names). We are grateful to these individuals for their generous collaborative spirit, without which we could not have built this collection.
Portions of the THL Medicine Collections were developed with the cooperation of the University of Virginia's Center for Complementary and Alternative Therapies, one of the original NIH-funded Centers to stimulate research in complementary and alternative medicines, directed by Dr. Ann Taylor. Additional support was provided by the UVA School of Nursing, the Raven Society, the UVA Weedon Foundation, the UVA Center for South Asian Studies, the UVA Center for Global Health, the TRACE Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education. The growth of the Medicine Collections is intertwined with the development of many THL technologies and content initiatives. Please see the THL Donors List for a full record of financial contributions to the Library.
