Description: This volume discusses a growing and changing group of therapies within the cognitive-behavioral tradition of clinical psychology. Many less traditional approaches to therapy based on themes such as mindfulness, acceptance, spirituality, emotion, and values are beginning to gradually be incorporated theoretically and empirically with other cognitive-behavioral approaches. In Mindfulness and Acceptance. clinical and research psychologists explore in a systematic manner the theoretical models for new and evolving approaches to treatment of a host of psychological issues and problems, such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, couple conflict, and substance abuse. Distinct in the therapies explored are their approach to the experiential and their direct and indirect strategies of treatment. This volume originates out of a conference held in the summer of 2002 where participants were asked to explore how their approaches to therapy fit within the wider themes and issues within the context of the cognitive and behavioral traditions. Given the rapidly changing nature of these areas of research, part of the effort of the numerous authors and psychologists focuses on delineating the philosophy and contours of their various approaches. Discussed in particular are: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical-Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), as well as the meditative approaches of mindfulness and vipassanā.
