Description: Freud and a series of psychoanalysts who followed after him paid very little attention to the Buddhist practice of meditation or else offered radical interpretations of how meditation operated based on their own developmental theories. However, some neo-Freudians have begun to approach Buddhist meditation anew while also maintaining central aspects of Freud's basic psychoanalytic method. Within the context of the psychoanalytic concept of countertransference, the author particularly looks at the Buddhist practice of "bare attention" or mindfulness and how it relates to Freud's concept of "evenly hovering attention."
